Licensed betting sites in Nigeria: legal and regulated bookmakers

Licensed betting sites in Nigeria name the regulator behind them. Since 2024 that is a state body such as the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority, or the NLRC in the Federal Capital Territory. A licence gives you rules the bookmaker has to follow and somewhere to complain if it does not. The first list holds the sites found on a state register; the second gives the licence each site in the Bettings.ng Table names, offshore ones included.

Quick answer

Are betting sites legal in Nigeria?

Yes, where a state licenses it: sports betting is open to over-18s in the states that license it, and a Nigerian licence comes from a state regulator. State regulators publish their licensees, and the Lagos register is the one this list was checked against. A company registration or an offshore licence is not an entry on that register.

The list

Betting sites on a Nigerian state register

The sites here are the ones whose Nigerian site is on a state regulator’s register. A brand that reaches Nigerian punters through its international site is left out, even where a local company of the same name is registered. A site that states a licence from another Nigerian state is in the second table, with the licence as the operator words it. A state licence covers betting in that state, for the dates on the register.

Licensed betting sites in Nigeria: how to check a licence yourself

It takes two minutes, and it is the one check that does not depend on anyone’s list.

  • Find it in the footer

Look at the bottom of the site for the regulator it names and a licence number. No licence named is a reason to stop.

  • Look it up at the regulator

Betting companies in Nigeria are licensed state by state, by bodies such as the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority. Check the name on the regulator’s own website.

  • Know what offshore means

An international site works under a licence issued elsewhere, Curaçao being a common example. A complaint then goes to the regulator that issued it.

Who regulates betting in Nigeria

Sports betting is open to over-18s in the states that license it, and a bookmaker licensed in Nigeria holds its licence from a state regulator. Who issues that licence changed in November 2024. The Supreme Court struck down the National Lottery Act 2005 as it applied to the states and held that lotteries and gaming belong to state governments.

Betting companies are now licensed state by state, by bodies such as the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority. The remit of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) is in effect limited to the Federal Capital Territory. State regulators have also agreed a Universal Reciprocity Certificate for online betting across member states, as a briefing by Aluko & Oyebode explains. The news piece on who regulates betting in Nigeria follows the changes.

The licence each site names is also shown in the table of the best betting sites in Nigeria. Each betting site review sets out what the operator states about it, and the crypto list prints the licence beside the coins.

How to check that a betting site is legit

A licensed betting site says which regulator issued its licence. Checking takes four steps.

  1. Scroll to the footer and find the regulator and the licence number the site names.
  2. Open the regulator’s own website by typing its address yourself, and look for the company among its licensees.
  3. Check that the company name in the footer matches the name at the regulator.
  4. Look for clear terms, an address and a way to reach support before you fund your account.

For Lagos, the regulator publishes its list of licensed operators. Each row gives the company, its trade name, the licence category and the dates the licence runs between.

Being registered is not the same thing as being licensed. Registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission makes a business a company; a gaming licence is a separate document, issued by a regulator. A search for registered betting companies should end at a regulator’s list of licensees.

What an offshore licence means

International brands work under licences issued outside Nigeria; Curaçao is a common example. An offshore licence is a real licence, but it is not regulation by a Nigerian state authority. The rules are the issuing regulator’s, and a complaint goes there, under its procedures.

A brand can also appear twice: a local company on a state register, and an international site under an offshore licence. The licence that covers your account is the one named on the site where you registered. Look it up on the issuing regulator’s website in the same way, and decide if it suits you before you deposit.

FAQ

Quick answers on betting licences

Who issues betting licences, what an offshore licence is and how to check a site yourself.

Which are the legal betting sites in Nigeria?

The sites in the first list are on a Nigerian state regulator’s register of licensed operators. A licence is given by a state, so it covers betting in that state. The register shows the company, the licence category and the dates.

Do betting sites need a licence in Nigeria?

A site licensed in Nigeria holds its licence from a state regulator, and sports betting is open to over-18s in the states that license it. An offshore site holds no Nigerian state licence. Expect a site to ask for ID before it pays out.

Who issues betting licences in Nigeria?

Since a Supreme Court judgment in November 2024, licensing is largely a matter for state regulators such as the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority. The National Lottery Regulatory Commission now acts, in effect, only within the Federal Capital Territory.

What is an offshore licence?

A gambling licence issued outside Nigeria, for example in Curaçao or Anjouan. The rules are the issuing regulator’s, and a complaint goes to that regulator; no Nigerian state authority is involved.

How do I know if a betting site is legit?

Find the regulator and the licence number in the footer, then look the company up on that regulator’s own website. Be wary of a site that names no licence, hides its terms or is promoted with promises of fixed matches.

Is a registered betting company the same as a licensed one?

No. Registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission makes a business a company; a gaming licence comes from a regulator. Check for the licence as well as the company registration.

18 and over only

A licence does not change the minimum age: betting is for people aged 18 and over. Set a deposit limit at any site, licensed or not. Responsible gambling: tools and support

How the licensed sites list is put together

The first list holds sites whose Nigerian site is on a state regulator’s register; the second gives each licence as the site states it. Bettings.ng earns commission from listed betting sites, which affects coverage and can affect their order. Overall scores are Bettings.ng’s editorial assessment against its published criteria.

Details to check on the operator’s site

  • The regulator and licence number in the footer of the site you register on
  • Whether the licence category covers the product you want, sportsbook or casino
  • Which currency the licensed site holds your balance in

The short version

Choosing a licensed betting site

A licensed site says who regulates it, and that claim can be checked in two minutes. Find the licence in the footer, look it up at the regulator.

Source checked:

The Lagos regulator’s list of licensed operators was read on 13 October 2026 for the sites in the first list. Licences that a site states itself come from operator pages read between 3 October 2026 and 13 October 2026; the top date is the earliest of those. The check covers Lagos entries and is no statement about every Nigerian state.
