1X2 betting: what 1, X and 2 mean on a bet slip

1X2 is the match result market: pick the home team, the draw or the away team. It is the first line on a football coupon and the base that other markets are built on.

1X2 football betting

Key points

  • 1 is a home win, X is a draw and 2 is an away win.
  • The bet is settled on the 90 minutes and stoppage time; extra time and penalties do not count.
  • The three prices together contain the bookmaker’s margin, which you can work out in a minute.
  • Double chance, draw no bet and handicaps are all built from the 1X2 prices.

1X2 betting is shorthand for the three ways a football match can end. The 1 stands for the team listed first, which is the home team; the 2 for the team listed second; the X for a draw. A coupon line reading 1.95 / 3.40 / 4.10 is the price of each in that order.

How to read a 1X2 line

Read a 1X2 line from left to right: home win, draw, away win.

Worked example

Team A v Team B: 2.10 / 3.30 / 3.60

1 (Team A wins)
₦1,000 returns ₦2,100
X (draw)
₦1,000 returns ₦3,300
2 (Team B wins)
₦1,000 returns ₦3,600

One of the three always happens, and the other two bets lose. The lowest price marks the favourite.

At a neutral ground, 1 is still the team named first. Read the names, not just the numbers, before you tap a price.

What counts as the result

What counts as the result is regular time: 90 minutes plus the stoppage time the referee adds. 22Bet’s football rules accept bets on regular time and count extra time and penalty shoot-outs only for markets such as to qualify. In a cup tie that is level after 90 minutes, the 1X2 result is X, whoever goes through. Each site has its own rule for a match that is abandoned.

The margin inside the three prices

The margin inside the three prices shows when you turn each one into a chance. Divide 100 by each price, then add the three.

Worked example

2.10 / 3.30 / 3.60

Home
100 ÷ 2.10 = 47.6%
Draw
100 ÷ 3.30 = 30.3%
Away
100 ÷ 3.60 = 27.8%
Total
105.7%
Margin
5.7%

The three chances add up to 105.7%, and the 5.7% over 100 is the bookmaker’s margin. A lower total means more of your stake comes back in the prices.

Markets built on 1X2

The markets built on 1X2 each change one thing about it.

  • Double chance puts two of the three results on one bet: 1X, X2 or 12.
  • Draw no bet is a win bet that returns the stake on a draw.
  • A handicap is 1X2 after one team has been given a goal start.
  • First half 1X2 is the result at half-time only.
  • HT/FT asks for the result at half-time and at full time together.
  • 1X2 and over/under, or 1X2 and GG, are combined markets where both parts must be right.

Do not forget the X

The X is the result punters forget. Back a team at 1.50 and a draw loses the bet, even though the team did not lose the match. A price of 1.50 needs the win two times in three just to break even.

Sportsbooks price the same match differently, and 1X2 is the easiest market to check: three numbers per site. Bettings.ng scores each sportsbook for odds in its best odds list. 1X2 betting Q&A

What is the meaning of 1X2?

It is the match result market. 1 is a win for the home team, X is a draw and 2 is a win for the away team.

What does X mean on a bet slip?

A draw. The bet wins if the scores are level after 90 minutes and stoppage time.

Which team is 1 and which is 2?

1 is the team listed first, the home team in a league fixture. 2 is the team listed second.

Does 1X2 include extra time?

No. It is settled on the 90 minutes and stoppage time. A cup match that goes to extra time is a draw for 1X2.

What is the difference between 1X2 and 12?

1X2 has three selections, including the draw. 12 is a double chance bet that either team wins, and it loses if the match is drawn.
