Key points
- At 22Bet and Melbet the player who retires loses the match bet if one set was completed.
- BetFury, Gamdom and bet365 void a match bet when the match ends by retirement.
- Bets on a completed set are settled as normal at each of these bookmakers.
A player calls the trainer, shakes hands and walks off a set up. The bookmaker you used decides if you are paid, refunded or beaten. The same retirement is settled one way at 22Bet and another at BetFury.
What happens to a match bet when a player retires?
When a player retires, the match bet stands at 22Bet and Melbet if the first set has been completed. The player who retires forfeits, so the opponent is settled as the winner. If the retirement comes during the first set, the bet goes back at odds of 1.
BetFury voids every market that was not already decided when the player stopped. Gamdom settles undecided markets as void, and a started but unfinished match is void at bet365 too. Its one exception is a disqualification, where the player who goes through is the winner.
Worked example
Player A wins the first set 6-3, then retires at 1-2
- ₦1,000 on Player A at 22Bet or Melbet
- Lost: one set was completed and Player A forfeits
- ₦1,000 on Player B at 2.00, 22Bet or Melbet
- Paid ₦2,000
- Either match bet at BetFury or bet365
- Void: ₦1,000 back
- Player A to win the first set
- Wins at each bookmaker
The same retirement costs a Player A backer the stake at one bookmaker and nothing at another.
Do set and games bets stand after a retirement?
Set and games bets stand after a retirement when the result was already fixed. Every bet on a completed set is settled at 22Bet and the rest are refunded, unless the outcome was certain at the moment play stopped. BetFury calls the same test natural conclusion.
The rules at 22Bet give an example. A match stops at 6-4, 0-6, 0-1, so at least 22 games were needed to finish it. Over 21.5 games wins, under 21.5 loses, and the games handicap is refunded.
BetFury’s example is a set abandoned at 4-4. Any finish needs ten games, so over 9.5 wins and under 9.5 loses. Over and under 10.5 are void. In the 6-3, 1-2 match above, a line of 21.5 was still open either way, so it is refunded.
What if a player withdraws before the match?
If a player withdraws before the match, stakes are refunded under the tennis rules of 22Bet, Melbet and BetFury. BetFury calls it a walkover and draws the line at the first point played. At 22Bet the section on results is harsher on one bet: it says a bet on the player who withdrew is lost. Ask which applies if that is your bet.
A delay is treated more gently than a retirement. At 22Bet bets on a postponed or interrupted match stand until it is played or the tournament ends. BetFury keeps unsettled markets pending through rain or darkness and voids them only if the tournament is cancelled.
A change of court, surface or venue leaves bets standing at 22Bet, BetFury and bet365. So check the order of play before you assume a late start means a refund.
What does a void tennis leg do to an acca?
A void tennis leg stays in the acca at odds of 1 and the other legs decide the return. Take a ₦500 treble at 1.90, 1.60 and 2.00, priced at 6.08 and worth ₦3,040. If the 1.90 leg is void and the others win, the price is 3.20 and the return is ₦1,600.
With tennis retirement bets the same slip can end three ways. At BetFury the leg is void. At 22Bet it is void in the first set, and after that it wins or loses with the player still on court.
Read the retirement line in the tennis rules before you back a player in the match market. The accumulator guide explains how a void leg reprices a slip, and games lines follow the arithmetic in the handicap guide. The 22Bet review and the BetFury review cover each bookmaker, and the Bettings.ng Table compares betting sites in Nigeria.
