Key points
- Under the IFAB protocol the referee always takes the final decision, and bets follow that decision.
- BetFury reserves the right to void bets placed while a wrong score was on its scoreboard.
- When VAR confirms a goal, bet365 keeps the time of the original goal for timed markets.
The net bulges, the app flashes 1-0 and the odds jump. Ninety seconds later the referee draws a rectangle in the air and the goal is gone. Three records now exist: the match score, any bet you placed in between, and any cash out you tried.
Does a goal ruled out by VAR count for bets?
A goal ruled out by VAR does not count for bets. The IFAB protocol lets the video assistant step in on four things: goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity. In each case the final decision stays with the referee, and the official result follows that decision.
A pre-match bet is the simple case. If the match ends 0-0 after a disallowed goal, over 0.5 goals loses and no first-scorer bet is paid. Results at 22Bet come from official sources, and it says the scores on its own site are for convenience.
BetFury covers the mistake that follows an overturned call. If a bet was settled in error because of a VAR decision, its rules allow the settlement to be corrected.
What happens to a live bet placed during a VAR check?
A live bet placed during a VAR check can be voided afterwards. BetFury reserves the right to void all bets placed while a wrong score was shown on its scoreboard. It also holds or delays live bets in high-risk moments, at its discretion.
Worked example
A goal given at 62:10 and ruled out at 63:40
- 62:10
- Ball in the net; the app shows 1-0
- 62:24
- You back over 1.5 goals at the new price
- 63:40
- The referee rules the goal out; the score is 0-0 again
- Pre-match over 0.5 bet
- Still open, and still needs a goal
- The 62:24 bet at BetFury
- Falls in the wrong-score period, so it can be voided
The live betting rules at 22Bet put the risk on the customer in plainer words. It takes no responsibility for an inaccurate live score and tells customers to check other sources. A bet there counts as accepted once it is registered on the server and confirmed online, and it cannot be edited afterwards.
Which time counts when VAR changes a decision?
When VAR changes a decision, timed markets use the clock named in the bookmaker’s rules. At bet365 a goal confirmed by VAR keeps the time of the original goal. A red card given by VAR is timed at the original offence, and an overruled penalty counts as never awarded.
BetFury settles penalty markets on the minute the referee awards the kick, VAR-confirmed awards included. Its offside markets use the time the referee gives the decision in every VAR case. In its first-to-happen markets an event that VAR overturns is ignored.
A bet such as a goal before the 30th minute turns on that choice. Check whether your market follows the incident or the decision before you count on a long review.
Can you cash out during a VAR review?
You can cash out during a VAR review only while the market stays open. Stake says cash out is not available on a suspended market, and that an attempt fails if the odds change during its time delay. BetFury keeps the right to adjust, suspend or withdraw a cash out offer at any time.
The tool is called Bet Slip Sale at 22Bet. A slip cannot be sold while one of its outcomes is blocked, and a new price means choosing the amount again. Wait for the restart, then look at the offer once.
Bets on VAR itself exist too. Both 22Bet and BetFury count a review only when the referee makes the rectangle signal or goes to the pitch-side screen. A “Goal Check” message on the stadium screen is not a review under BetFury’s rules.
